Questions senior HR leaders ask

HR work design, systems and AI adoption, explained plainly.

Practical answers for leaders who need better operating control, credible proof of value and more capacity from the team they already have.

What is work design?

Work design is the deliberate choice of what work needs to happen, how it moves, who owns it, which decisions need human judgement and how performance is measured. It connects roles, processes, systems, data and capability around a useful outcome.

Why look at the process before choosing a system?

A system records and reinforces a way of working. If the process has unclear ownership, unnecessary approvals or unreliable data, a new platform can make the same problem more expensive. Process clarity gives you better requirements and better system decisions.

Do we need a new HRIS?

Review workflows, configuration, integration, data quality, adoption and ownership first. A replacement becomes a sound decision when the evidence shows the current platform lacks the capability the work requires.

How does AI fit into work design?

AI fits where it can support a defined piece of work with a clear owner, usable data and a safe route for review or escalation. AI creates value when the work has a clear process, owner, data and review path.

How long does an engagement take?

The length depends on the question and the amount of evidence available. A focused diagnostic can establish priorities quickly. A redesign, implementation or value-recovery programme takes longer and is sequenced around the work, dependencies and capacity of the team.

How do you measure success?

We choose measures tied to the reason for changing. These can include capacity released, cycle time, cost-to-serve, exception volume, data quality, adoption, decision quality, risk or the time taken to answer an important workforce question.

How should the CFO and board be involved?

The CFO and board should see the business reason, trade-offs, evidence of progress and the next decision. They need a credible link between the work, capacity, risk, cost and measurable business impact.

What does decision-ready data mean?

Decision-ready data has clear definitions, an accountable owner, enough quality and enough context to support a decision. Leaders can see the appropriate use and limits of the information.

How are compliance and governance handled?

Governance is designed into ownership, decision rights, access, review points, documentation and exception handling. For AI, it also includes privacy, fairness, human oversight, confidence thresholds and a clear route to challenge or stop a use case.

What happens to the HR team’s capacity?

The aim is to release capacity from re-keying, chasing, reconciliation and avoidable exception handling. The team then needs an explicit plan for where that capacity goes, such as workforce planning, business partnering, manager support or further improvement.

What is a typical starting point?

Start where the friction is highest and visible to the business. The AI-Ready HR Diagnostic is a useful first step. If a specific HRIS is live but underused, an HRIS Value Recovery Assessment can focus the conversation on workflows, configuration, data, adoption and ownership.

Still working out where to begin?

Start with evidence. The AI-Ready HR Diagnostic helps you identify the work design constraint that should come first.
